The old village of Cabras is 9 m (29.52ft) above sea level, on the eastern shore of the pond named after the same village, i.e., Stagno di Cabras. The pond is one of the largest in Europe, contains both sweet and salty waters and teems with rare species of birds, such as the Red Crested Pochard, the Great Crested Grebe, the Purple Swamphen, and the pink flamingos, which live among its reeds. A visit to the pond is made possible by narrow passageways leading to different corners of this large body of water.

Within Cabras’ territory spreads out the Peninsule of Sinis, which became marine protected area in 1997 and is considered one of the most beautiful and wild places in Sardinia. It is a little corner of heaven where one can find beaches which are famous for their enchanting beauty, as well as a still untouched, preserved wild nature.

Besides this rich natural heritage, Cabras boasts notable archaeological sites, such as Tharros (an ancient Phoenician town on the coast), Cuccuru is Arrius (a Neolithic necropolis), the underground sanctuary of San Salvatore, the Churches of San Giovanni and Santa Maria, a Museum and more than 25 nuraghi.
